11 I have seen something else under the sun:
The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong,
nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant
or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.
Solomon was undoubtedly one of the wisest, most capable, and wealthiest men who ever lived. Yet he wrote ( as far as scholars can tell ) one of the darkest, most depressing, seemingly hopeless works of literature ever penned. “It’s all a waste of time, nothing you do matters, it will all count for absolutely nothing once they bury you.”
He was right, of course. It is all “meaningless”—and worse, there is no point to learning anything, acquiring any skills or proficiencies, achieving anything, inventing, deducing, earning, saving, or storing up for the future. There is no reward or credit that you can earn, nothing you can set aside for yourself or others that won’t be taken away from you, seemingly at whim. Need more? Try this search of Ecclesiastes.
But Solomon seems to have been lacking a key item of information which has been provided to us.
25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
1“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. 2In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
Do what you need to do to get by for now, but look forward to what God has prepared for us—a Government and a Law that are for our good, a Way of life that makes sense, a Prosperity that can never be taken away.
37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
